چکیده
Thermodynamics serves as a universal means for studying physical systems from an energy perspective. In recent years, with the establishment of field stochastic and quantum thermodynamics, ideas thermodynamics have been generalized to small fluctuating systems. Independently developed in mathematics statistics, optimal transport theory concerns by which one can optimally source distribution target distribution, deriving useful metric between probability distributions, called Wasserstein distance. Despite their seemingly unrelated nature, intimate connection these fields has unveiled context continuous-state Langevin dynamics, providing several important implications nonequilibrium this study, we elucidate analogous discrete cases developing thermodynamic framework transport. We first introduce novel quantity dynamical state mobility, significantly improves uncertainty relation provides insights into precision currents Markov jump processes. then derive variational formulas that connect distances Markovian dynamics described master equations. Specifically, rigorously prove distance equals minimum product irreversible entropy production mobility over all admissible dynamics. These not only unify relationship continuous cases, but also generalize it case. addition, demonstrate obtained lead remarkable applications such stringent speed limits finite-time Landauer principle. bounds are tight be saturated arbitrary temperatures, even zero-temperature limit. Notably, principle explain finite dissipation at extremely low cannot explained conventional principle.1 MoreReceived 26 July 2022Revised 1 December 2022Accepted 13 2022DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevX.13.011013Published American Physical Society under terms Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Thermodynamic uncertainty relation for biomolecular processes.
Biomolecular systems like molecular motors or pumps, transcription and translation machinery, and other enzymatic reactions, can be described as Markov processes on a suitable network. We show quite generally that, in a steady state, the dispersion of observables, like the number of consumed or produced molecules or the number of steps of a motor, is constrained by the thermodynamic cost of gen...
متن کاملOptimal Multigrid Algorithms for Calculating Thermodynamic Limits
Beyond eliminating the critical slowing down, multigrid algorithms can also eliminate the need to produce many independent fine-grid configurations for averaging out their statistical deviations, by averaging over the many samples produced in coarse grids during the multigrid cycle. Thermodynamic limits can be calculated to accuracy (; in just 0((;-2) computer operations. Examples described in ...
متن کاملA thermodynamic unification of jamming
Fragile materials ranging from sand to fire retardant to toothpaste are able to exhibit both solid and fluid-like properties across the jamming transition. Unlike ordinary fusion, systems of grains, foams and colloids jam and cease to flow under conditions that still remain unknown. Here, we quantify jamming using a thermodynamic approach by accounting for the structural ageing and the shear-in...
متن کاملThermodynamic geometry of minimum-dissipation driven barrier crossing.
We explore the thermodynamic geometry of a simple system that models the bistable dynamics of nucleic acid hairpins in single molecule force-extension experiments. Near equilibrium, optimal (minimum-dissipation) driving protocols are governed by a generalized linear response friction coefficient. Our analysis demonstrates that the friction coefficient of the driving protocols is sharply peaked ...
متن کاملThermodynamic Uncertainty Relations
Bohr and Heisenberg suggested that the thermodynamical quantities of temperature and energy are complementary in the same way as position and momentum in quantum mechanics. Roughly speaking, their idea was that a definite temperature can be attributed to a system only if it is submerged in a heat bath, in which case energy fluctuations are unavoidable. On the other hand, a definite energy can o...
